What is the 'Militia'?

Every discussion I have with someone who is not an avid Second Amendments rights advocate seems to boil down to the word 'militia'. They feel that militia means the Military, or the National Guard, or some other form of organized defense.

I came across this article which really simplifies what the intent of our Founding Fathers was, and is, regarding the Second Amendment and just what that word 'militia' really means - then and now.

To quote Mark Whittington; 'The problem is that "Militia" in the 18th Century referred to the entire citizenry in arms. Thus, when one shoots an intruder who is bent on doing one harm in one's home, one is acting as a member of a militia in enforcing the law, according to the original intent of the founders.'

See - it's simple - we are the militia, so let's stop over complicating things.

I am not a criminal - or am I?

I was reading a great article by Greg Bean in the Examiner and was shocked (as were many of his readers) to find that I just MIGHT be a criminal and acting illegally every day. No, I am not carrying a concealed handgun without a permit, nor am I robbing banks or stealing Tootsie Rolls from my local Krausers.

You see, I carry knives. Pocket knives of the folding variety to be exact. I keep one in my car as well. These are generally high quality knives made by Kershaw, Buck and Spyderco. These are tools. I can open boxes with them, pry stuck items loose with them, trim hanging threads with them, and thousands of other non-weapon like activities.

All of my knives have blades under 5 inches in length and fit neatly in my pocket. When carrying them, I never have an urge to stab someone with them, ever. I do not secretly hope that someone will accost me so I can 'whip out my knife' and defend myself. They are just tools.

I am going to do some more research and see if I can put together a comprehensive list of state and local laws pertaining to New Jersey knife laws. I will post my results here. If any of you have links or information, please feel freJe to contact me or post here.

'Large' Capacity Magazine Restrictions for New Jersey - a reminder

As a reminder to all my New Jersey shooters, the magazine limit in New Jersey is 15 rounds - NOT 10:

New Jersey prohibits the manufacture, transport, shipment, sale, or disposal of any large capacity ammunition magazine, unless the magazine is intended to be used for authorized military or law enforcement purposes. N.J. Rev. Stat § 2C:39-9h. New Jersey law defines "large capacity ammunition magazine" as a box, drum, tube or other container which is capable of holding more than 15 rounds of ammunition to be fed continuously and directly into a semi-automatic firearm. Section 2C:39-1y.

How to stop a carjacking ...

Last week was deadly and violent in Newark. Nine carjackings, nine shootings and three attempted carjackings. One of the attempted carjackings was an off-duty Essex County Sheriff. The officer fired at the suspects, who fled in a Jeep that was used in an earlier carjacking.

This begs the question, how many of the nine successful carjackings would have failed if the car owners had been armed and able to defend themselves? How many fewer ATTEMPTS would have been made if the CRIMINALS were not sure which VICTIMS were armed and would resist?

These statistics show that 67% of all victims of non-fatal carjackings resisted their attacker even though 74% of all victims faced an ARMED attacker. The statistics are from 2002 and are the most recent I could find. They also do not differentiate HOW the victim resisted.
